The Co-Op Party should delink from Labour and link with the Green Party.

I studied Economics in College and my University encouraged me to study Co-ops with a small grant of money. Good Philosophers or Marketing agents can make any company sound great. And while I should not be influenced by insults as a researcher one thing I learned during my study of co-ops is that nothing prevents people from being people. One co-op leader claimed to advocate Slavery. I don't know if he believed slavery would solve all of the countries problems. Or there were people who were insulting and hostile... possibly because i WAS an outsider and not welcome. There are a lot of ideas in the world and suggestions on how to make life better. The co-operative movement was born in an attempt to counter the greed of the the mill owners and the growing economically crushing spirit of competition that prevailed. The most successful group began when twenty eight working men formed a society "called the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers. Each of the members saved one pound which he contributed to the society forming their initial working capital of £28.00" (Southgate GW "English Economic History). This money was used to buy commodities, mostly groceries at wholesale prices and they opened their first shop in 31 Todd Lane Rochdale, now the Co-op Museum. From this small beginning the Co-operative movement grew until many town had multiple branches, Blackburn a Cotton town about 15 miles from Rochdale , be the 1950's had twenty seven branches to serve approximately 145,000 people . Prices were cheap, the shops were austere but welcoming, consisting of a huge, shop length counter, assistants to run round to fill your order. A Berkel's Bacon machine at one end of the counter with its huge handled flywheel and razor sharp blade which could cut meat from a millimeter to an inch with no problems and a potato weighing machine near a sack of spuds. Today all that has changed, the co-op is now rapidly approaching a reputation of being the most expensive supermarket in any town, leaving Tesco, Sainsbury and the other outlets in its financial wake. From the days when membership of the Co-op was a lot more than a gimmick and members saved saved their divi for the two weeks of 'wakes' weeks; we have a situation where the weekly shop can show a difference of £10 to £15 higher when compared with other outlets. What a damn shame. If you here rumbling from the North it's the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers turning in twenty eight graves.

I'm ALL for Co-ops, and find "political correctness" a little whiney..... BUT, I find it a little disturbing that Co-operatives UK CHOSE to exclude the existance of The Republic of Ireland where co-ops thrive, from the map (twice) where they show the rest of the world, BUT NOT The Republic of Ireland. Feels a little "old BBC"

There is a grocery chain in the USA called Publix. They sell shares of stock exclusively to their workers. This motivates workers to work harder and give better service so their business performs better. It also keeps control local and allows decisions to be made by people who see the company's day to day operations first hand. It has often been called "the democratization of business" or "The people's capitalism" Credit unions are a great example of this.
